As the first snowdrops push up through the hard ground, and the trees start to produce their first waxy red buds that will undoubtedly unfurl into the first leaves of the year, our thoughts turn to spring.

People sometimes struggle with this season thinking there’s nothing but tulips and daffs on offer. There are indeed a whole host of seasonal delights to behold and actually, at market, the spring flowers have been around since about September!

For me, Spring is a time of scents and reawakening- the first bursts of colour, those bright daffs beating away our winter blues, the heady scented lilac bush and the wild, self-seeding muscari.

The following are all in abundance in spring…

  • – Ranunculus
  • – Anemones
  • – Scented paperwhites
  • – Lilac
  • – Muscari
  • – Forget me not
  • – Mimosa
  • – Blossom – including coral, quince and pink cherry
  • – Dicentra (Bleeding Heart)
  • – Hellebore
  • – Iris
  • – Hyacinths
  • – Bluebells
  • – Year-round rose varieties

I’ve created a useful board of these flowers on Pinterest >>

Nothing, to my mind, is more special than rare lily of the valley, which is traditionally in season April-May and although small, packs an almighty punch of a scent. It can be pricey, so save it just for the bridal bouquet and the grooms buttonhole maybe.

There are no colour ‘rules’ in spring, but my advice would be to use seasonal pastels; rich creams and buttermilk yellows, soft blues, palest pinks and crisp fresh white. Clean, clear glass, tarnished metals and cut glass vases add character to a pale and interesting palette.

Here are two colour palettes that work especially well in Spring…
